Penis cancer is a growth of malignant cancer cells found on the skin or in the tissues of the penis. This type of cancer is often associated with a history of improper medical treatment that has been done to treat the foreskin that is too tight or phimosis. In addition, men who have just been circumcised in adulthood are also said to be at risk of developing penis cancer.

The most common type of penis cancer is squamous cell carcinoma (SSC), which is found in 95 percent of cases of penis cancer. However, there are also rare types of non-squamous penis cancer, including Merkel cell carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, melanoma, lymphoma, and others.

Causes of Penis Cancer

The cause of penis cancer is not known with certainty at this time. However, men who have not been circumcised are believed to be at high risk of developing this type of cancer. This is because urine can get trapped in the foreskin which, if not cleaned, can contribute to the growth of cancer cells.

Several studies have also found that men who are exposed to certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) are more prone to developing penis cancer.

Penis Cancer Risk Factors

Apart from the factors above, there are also several factors that can trigger penis cancer. One of them is unhealthy sexual relations, such as having multiple sexual partners. This is because unhealthy sexual relations can lead to sexually transmitted diseases. If not treated properly, sexually transmitted diseases are also thought to develop into penis cancer.

Here are other risk factors for penis cancer:

  • Be 60 years of age or older;
  • Have phimosis, which is a condition in which the foreskin of the penis cannot be pulled back over the head of the penis;
  • Not maintaining good penis hygiene; and
  • Smoking or using tobacco products.

Watch for Symptoms

Changes in the skin of the penis are the most common symptom of penis cancer. These symptoms can appear on the foreskin in men who are not circumcised, or on the tip of the penis or shaft. Symptoms of penis cancer include:

  • Changes in the thickness or color of the skin on the penis;
  • A lump appears on the penis;
  • There is a rash or small, hard lumps on the penis that look like scabs that are not healing;
  • Bad smell under the foreskin;
  • Injury to the penis which may bleed;
  • Swelling at the tip of the penis; and
  • A lump appears under the skin in the groin area.

Most men with the symptoms above may not be proven to have penis cancer, but only an infection or allergy. However, it is very important to get any unusual symptoms that appear on or near your penis as soon as possible. That way, treatment can be done earlier.
