Recent research has found that sugary drinks can increase the risk of high cholesterol. New research found that adults who drank at least one sugary drink when compared to those who did not. Those who consume sugary drinks have a greater risk of experiencing dyslipidemia or higher levels of unhealthy fats. This can increase the risk of heart disease. There are a few reasons why sugary drinks can affect cholesterol levels and heart health and need to be avoided in order to maintain our health.

A lot of researchers said that middle-aged and older adults who consumed sugary drinks every day had a greater risk of developing abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared to those who rarely consumed these drinks. Someone who drinks sugary drinks has a 98% higher chance of high triglycerides.

These findings suggest that intake of sugary drinks was associated with HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels that worsened over time in someone who consumed sugar frequently, compared to those who rarely consumed sugary drinks.

Affects HDL and LDL Cholesterol

Cholesterol consists of two types, namely Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and HighDensity Lipoprotein (HDL). HDL is considered good cholesterol, because it helps remove LDL cholesterol, the type of cholesterol that can build up in the arteries that can increase the risk of heart disease. HDL is closely related to exercise and fitness. Naturally, to increase HDL is to do regular exercise and to always maintain a lifestyle. Having higher LDL and lower HDL in a person’s blood can mean you are at risk of developing atherosclerosis, which is a thickening and hardening of the arteries that are blocked by too much plaque. Poor blood flow to the heart can lead to cardiovascular disease. HDL also changes the chemical composition of LDL, preventing it from oxidizing, which helps reduce inflammation and prevent damage to the arteries.
